How to land a job that you want and get the salary that you want!

I have switched quite a few jobs in my professional career. One of them at a time when I was completely jobless. Every time I managed to get exactly what I wanted from the job. In this process, I learned a lot. Sharing some of my learnings here:

1. Consistently work on your skillset. That’s prime.

2. Apply only to companies you would like to work for in terms of both the quality of work and the compensation they can offer. Interviewing in any other company will be a waste of time and energy.

3. Do not fan over a select few companies. There are a lot of companies doing good work and offering great salaries. Research on that. This will increase your options.

4. When talking to a recruiter, do not share your current compensation or expected salary right away. You can just tell them, that you are comfortable discussing this with them only after you clear the interviews.

5. After you clear the interviews, stick to the minimum salary expectation that makes sense for you to make the switch. If even after the switch you are unhappy about the compensation, you will be stuck in the same loop. What’s the point then? It’s okay to say no and move to the other options instead.

Bonus Tip 1: While in an interview, do not talk about your personal hardships or anything you do not like about your current company. The recruitment team is only looking for reasons to hire you and how you will be a great asset to the team. Anything else is just noise.

Bonus Tip 2: If you cleared the interviews, it means that you are qualified. This also means you deserve a competitive salary. There is no such thing as a standard hike that ties you down to your previous salary. Ask for what you are worth. To know what you are worth, research. If you are really confident about your skill-set you can really work through that mentality. Suggest you go through a ton of negotiation tips videos and articles on the internet.

Wishing you a great work-life! :)
